The Briarcombe Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting artists and cultural organizations with the resources needed to thrive. Our focus is in amplifying stories that have been historically suppressed and cultivating magic in order to reimagine a more just world.

Founder
Caterina Fake

Caterina is an investor at Yes VC, a pre-seed and seed stage venture capital fund, the host of the #1 Tech Podcast Should This Exist? addressing the question of our times: how is technology impacting our humanity? Caterina works to create cultures of innovation, creativity and civility and believes we can all make the internet a kinder, more human place. She founded The Briarcombe Institute to support artists and cultural organizations working in fields such as music, visual art, film and video, writing and performance. Previously she served as Chairman of Etsy and was the co-founder of Flickr.

Amanda Hughen

Amanda Hughen is a visual artist who lives and works in San Francisco.  Hughen/Starkweather, her 20 year collaboration with artist Jennifer Starkweather, has shown internationally including commissions by SFMOMA, the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco Arts Commission, Samuel Merritt University, among others. Their research-based work centers around water and investigates engineered landscapes impacted by climate change.

Katarina La Poll

Katarina is a poet, performer, and teaching artist from the San Francisco Bay Area now residing in Brooklyn, New York. After working in communications and development at an environmental nonprofit and ghostwriting for a publishing company, Katarina joined The Briarcombe Institute to expand arts programming and manage the artist residency program. She also currently co-facilitates a generative writing workshop called Personal Histories.
